The problem

602,000 workers suffering from work-related stress, depression or anxiety (new or longstanding) in 2018/19 in the UK, source Labour Force Survey (LFS).

12.8 million working days lost due to work-related stress, depression or anxiety in the UK, source Labour Force Survey (LFS).

The Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 states that ‘every employer should ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of all of their employees’.

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1992 require employers to adopt modern risk management techniques.

There have been several cases of work-related stress which have been examined by the courts.

The most important of these was Barber v. Somerset County Council (2004) which reached the House of Lords. The leading judgement in this case set out the following principles (only a few listed):

• employers must keep up to date with the developing knowledge of occupational stress and the probable effectiveness of the precautions that can be taken to meet it.

• there is a statutory duty to carry out risk assessments.

There is likely to be an increase in the number of work-related stress cases going to court in the future.

The focus on employees’ mental and physical health and wellbeing is the aim of Wellbeing sessions in the workplace. It encourages employees to use their lunch break and other times to get away from their desks and get involved in activities that might benefit their mental health.

The session can start off with a mindfulness session and then other activities surrounding healthy eating, exercise and resilience in the workplace.

By using a life coach/transformational coach can help encourage a person/organisation on matters having to do with careers or personal challenges.

According to Newsweek a life coach is “Part consultant, part motivational speaker, part therapist and part rent-a-friend, coaches work with managers, entrepreneurs, and just plain folks, helping them define and achieve their goals — career, personal, or most often, both.”

Hiring a life coach can push you to become better versions of yourself, much like how a personal trainer pushes her or his client to be their best physically. The difference is that a personal trainer can motivate by pushing someone to be in the best condition they can be through a tailored exercise regimen, while a life coach will motivate a person to reach a goal and encourage mental health. A life coach is a source of positivity, motivation, and accountability in their physical fitness, personal relationships, and professional life.

Once the life coach has identified stressors or goals for a person, they can work with them to create direction and focus and give advice.

a life coach is not a counsellor. They merely provide their clients with guidance and motivation, so they can make their own decisions.

Our program helps you to figure out what makes you happy, set goals to work toward it; plan the steps to achieve those goals and check daily that you are staying in the ‘Happiness Zone’.
